CREATE Arts Center and the Newport/Oldtown Chamber of Commerce are joining together to invite the community to take part in “ Fish Frenzy,” a street-art project open to everyone in the area. Four-foot long wooden fish, personally decorated by families or individuals, will be displayed on the streets of Newport and Oldtown August 15 – September 15. Ribbons and prizes will be awarded in several categories.
You can pick up your four-foot long wooden fish at CREATE or the Chamber office for a fee of $10.00. Fish go on sale in June.
If you need help or direction in finishing your personal fish, a fish decorating class will be held at CREATE on July 19. Check with CREATE for cost.
Decorated fish must be turned in August 15 at CREATE or the Chamber. Fish will go on display August 15 and continue through September 15. Everyone will have a chance to vote for their favorite fish during the display time. Participants who have fish in the display can take them home after September 15.
If children want to decorate their own fish there will be “Galloping Guppies” available for them.
Fish Frenzy promises to be a fun project for everyone. Families and individuals are
encouraged to make “Fish Frenzy” a great summer project. Now is the time to get your
ideas ready to decorate your own, personal, really big fish.

Summer's Featured Artist: Molly Saty, Poet
Molly, a lover and writer of poetry is a retired teacher.
She lives rurally at her river home near Newport with her
husband Bob, on property she has owned and enjoyed
for nearly 40 years. She draws poetic inspiration from
the seasonal change of locations…from the lush Pend
Oreille area to the stark mountains and desert near Peoria,
Arizona, where they winter. She finds poems in the varied
spaces and situations between the two locations.
Always a casual writer of poetry, she was inspired as a
young woman by the Northwest poetry movement of
the 1970’s and teachers like David Wagoner, Hugo, and
Primus St. John at Haystack at Cannon Beach Oregon.
Since retiring 16 years ago, working alone and developing
her style, she has become a serious and award winning
poet, winning 10 out of 72 awards plus the theme poem
at the AZ State Poetry Fall Convention 2005 and in
2006 the State Legacy award. She chaired the 2007 AZ
Spring Conference. She has been a five time winner in
the World Day of Poetry contest run by the Spokane
Scribes in Eastern Washington. Her poems appear this
year in the Washington Poets’ anthology, Cascade and in
the National Federation of State Poetry Societies’ annual
edition of Encore.
Her first book of poems Put Sparklers on My Grave is
in its second printing. Her poetry is popular with people
who say they didn’t realize they liked poetry. She loves
teaching and lecturing to club groups and spreads the
joy of poetry every way she can. She is a member of
Washington Poets, and past vice president of the Arizona
State Poetry Society.
Of her own writing she says “I put the keepsakes of
ordinary days into my poetry. Even in my travels, I find
simple observations and experiences that make up life.
My poetry is seldom about huge events. My language
is uncomplicated, sometimes homemade, and I give my
readers credit by not telling them how to feel about the
situations I present. I love filming little word pictures,
making vivid images and memorable tales that touch the
reader. Enjoy!”

Global Art Project Exhibit at CREATE
CREATE’s exhibit of Global Art Project pieces opened Friday, March 27. The exhibit featured pieces contributed by area artists as a part of the biennial celebration of the effort to secure world peace through the arts. Artists in this exhibit were matched with artists throughout the world. When this exhibit closed April 22, the art was exchanged, by mail, with matched artists. After the exchange, the art received by local artists will also be displayed at CREATE during the June exhibit, Rhubarb, Birdhouses and Global Art.
The large canvas, begun at Spokane’s First Night, completed at CREATE and titled “Profiles in Peace”, was included in the show as well as a bowl titled, “Hands Around the World”, made of small, ceramic hands by Bev Numbers. Sherry Mays contributed a carved and painted gourd construction which incorporates tiny, rolled messages tucked inside and Paul Flanary painted a small, mixed media canvas which has shards of robin’s egg included in the composition and is called “Just a Small Peace, Please”. Patricia Hicks Ruiz, who is the Project Director for the Global Art Project at CREATE, contributed “Peace Shields” constructed of canvas, metal, wood, beads and feathers and meant to signify the inherent, human desire for peace and tranquility. A fimo and watercolor piece entitled “The Peace Tree” was shown by Merry Lee Rozelle. The Homelink Elementary provided a paper mache bowl with colorful hands. Loyce Akers contributed “Ambassador of Peace”, a black and white augmented photograph. Homelink Intermediate showed “Baskets for Piece,” a quilted piece. In addition, several dozen decorated hand silhouettes done by CREATE members and area children were on display.
CREATE's exchange partner was Ra Group, Shanghai, China, contact person Shi Akuei. Ruiz’s exchanged with Ying Yu Huang, Hunei Shiang, Kaohsiung County, Taiwan. Number’s exchanged with Chi-Hsiang Lin, Tainan City, Taiwan. Mays exchanged with Sarah Davis of Bristol, ME. Flanary’s exchanged with Ateeka, Milano, Italy. Rozelle’s exchanged with Barbara Burk, Beechwood, Ohio. Homelink Elementary exchanged with Peter Noyes Elementary School, Sudbury, MA. Homelink Intermediate exchanged with Mount St. Thomas, Wollongong, Australia, and Homelink 8th grade exchanged with St. Elizabeth School, Baltimore, MD. Akers exchanged with Kathryn Hsieh of Taiwan.
Global Art Project exchange art will remain on display at the CREATE Arts Center Gallery through June. Hours are Tuesday through Friday 9 AM to 1 PM and by appointment. The Gallery will be open during the June 7 Rhubarb Festival.

Message from the President
Summer promises to be fun at CREATE, with The Rhubarb Festival bigger and better than ever on June 7th and CREATE’s
first street art project “ Fish Frenzy.”
The Rhubarb Festival expects 25 vendors and more rhubarb than last year. We will be blocking off the street on Fea between 4th and the alley to offer more shopping and fun. Molly Saty, our featured artist, will be here to sign her poetry books, so come by and get one.
Birdhouses will be on display for you to bid on. Silent bids will be taken until June 30th so make sure you get by and pick out your favorite-- there will be lots to choose from. This project helps CREATE pay for programs and classes in our building for both children and adults.
We will have more rhubarb than ever this year for you to purchase and many wonderful baked items to buy, so come early and pick up your favorite baked item while you listen to the strains of bluegrass being played in the yard. The Garden will be open for self-guided tours. Check out the water-wise plantings the Master Gardeners’ have put there.
Fish, Fish, everywhere you look big beautiful four-foot fish. We invite everyone to paint or decorate a fish for display downtown starting in August. You can pick up your fish at CREATE for $10.00, decorate it, display it and take it home in September to display on your wall or in your yard. Fish Frenzy promises to be fun for everyone with smaller Guppies for the kids at $5.00. The Chamber is our partner in this project, and we are developing ballots so you can vote for your favorite.
Winter was wayyyyyy too long and summer can fly by so don’t miss out on any of the fun and activities at CREATE.
See you soon.
